What happened to G.I. Robot Mark 1?
In the line up for Creature Commandos G.I. Robot is mark 2 (look the number 2 on his helmet). What happened to mark 1? It’s a story of bravery, friendship and sacrifice.
The line up of Creature Commandos is very different from the original monsters who fought for the Allies in the pages of Weird War Tales. But some things don’t change and some sacrifices are permanent.
G.I. Robot mark 1 is designed for jungle warfare and serves on the south pacific island of Tattu with Sergeant Coker. During their patrol, they are attacked. G.I. Robot saves Coker and when a grenade falls in front of them, Coker uses his helmet to save G.I. Robot.
Coker is injured. G.I. Robot carries his injured companion to get medical help. But when the robot is commanded to forget Coker, it hesitates and disobeys the order.
Launching himself into the sea, G.I. Robot pursues the medical ship that carried away Coker. While swimming through the ocean, G.I. Robot encounters the Creature Commandos who have been attacked by a prehistoric creature.
G.I. Robot provides the Creatures Commandos with cover and allows them to escape being eaten. But more problems are waiting to arrive in the form of a flying saucer from under the ocean.
The Creature Commandos and G.I. Robot are carried down to the lost city of Atlantis where they encounter a race of androids descended from the original inhabitants of the city of Atlantis.
Having been condemned to their underwater existence by surface dwellers the city of Atlantis has stockpiled missiles to destroy the surface world.
The Creature Commandos start to fight the race of androids until the leader convinces G.I. Robot to support the Atlanteans.
G.I. Robot stops the fight and herds the Creature Commandos back onto the flying saucer. The flying saucer is to acts as the craft that will guide the missiles to the surface and ensure they hit their intended destination.
The robot appears to be working for the Atlanteans and leaves with the missiles in close formation behind. At a safe distance, G.I. Robot ejects the Creature Commandos from the flying saucer and returns to the city of Atlantis where the missiles destroy the vengeful androids intend upon the destruction of the surface world.
G.I. Robot mark 1 sacrificed itself to protect the surface world and all it’s inhabitants. But we suspect that Sergeant Coker was at the forefront of G.I. Robot thinking. At the very least, the sacrifice that Coker made to protect G.I. Robot showed the robot the best course of action and, of course, stopped the robot from being destroyed to allow it to go on its first and last adventure with the Creature Commandos.
