Shocking Origin Story of Spider-man 2099
Spider-Man 2099 appears as the antagonist in the second Miles Morales Spider-Verse movie. The origin of this icon character gives an insight into his grave and severe attitude.
In 2099, the world is a very different place. Megacorporations run every part of society from work and leisure through to law enforcement and government.
The age of heroes has ended. There is no Spider-Man, Captain America or Thor. In the absence of truth and justice, the megacorporations can get away with doing anything they want and anything that makes them more money and increases their power.
Miguel O’Hara works in genetics in Nueva York for the megacorporation Alchemax. To say Miguel isn’t a people person is a bit of an understatement. He is a gifted scientist and looks down on his immediate superiors.
When Miguel’s supervisor Aaron tries to remind Miguel of the chain of command, Miguel ridicules and humiliates the man. Miguel has made huge progress on his creation of a super powered soldier called corporation raider and feels invulnerable. He even makes jokes about the big boss’s dead father to Tyler Stone, the big boss.
The arrival of Stone brings the requirement for Miguel to used prisoners as test subjects for his super solider project. Not exactly comfortable with the situation, Miguel goes ahead with the experiments. When the first subject is put through the process the results are horrific and the test subject dies a horrible death, but does exhibit enhanced strength.
Stone is pleased. Miguel is horrified.
Speaking with his boss, , Miguel expresses his desire to resign. Stone give Miguel a drink and asks him to talk about his decision. When Miguel finishes his drink and wants to leave, Stone asks him to reconsider.
Miguel is shocked, but it’s nothing next to what Stone tells him next. Stone tells Miguel that as a parting gift, he has spiked Miguel’s drink with Rapture. Rapture is a highly addictive drug that rewrites a person’s DNA making it impossible for them to kick the habit. As Alchemax is the only company legally allowed to produce the drug, Miguel would be breaking the law if he tried to buy the drug from anyone else.
Miguel staggers from the office and makes it home only to lash out at his girlfriend, Dana. Faced with a horrifying future of chemical addiction and unending servitude to an organisation who deceived him, Miguel takes drastic action.
He heads back to the lab and disables all the safety protocols. With a couple of his own DNA, Miguel is going to use his invention to rewrite his own DNA and remove the addiction to Rapture.
Unfortunately for Miguel, his supervisor, Aaron see his in the lab and secretly changes the setting on the machine. Aaron adds 50% spider DNA in a desire to pay Miguel back for his arrogance.
You know what happens next. It’s not a bite from a radioactive spider, but there is an explosion and eventually Miguel becomes Spider-Man 2099.
Spider-Man 2099 is born from a man’s desperate attempts to free himself from the grasp of tyrannical organisation that cares nothing for the man and wishes to exploit his intelligence. The addition of Miguel’s own shortcomings creates Spider-Man 2099.
Miguels frees himself of addition to Rapture, but now he has to work for the company that expects his servitude while also dealing with his new powers. And we all know what comes with new powers….responsibilities.
