Dead X-Men (but not zombies)
Dead X-Men #1 starts a four-issue incarnation of X-Men after the distinctive stories of the Krakoa era.
The Fall of X has seen Marvel’s mutant heroes thrown into chaos after the shocking events of the 2023 Hellfire Gala.
Nightcrawler has taken up being Spider-Man. Captain America resurrected the Uncanny Avengers (mixing the Avengers line-up with a few mutant heroes as well). Mystique has been delivering a few shocking revelations. Doctor Doom has revealed his own team of X-men (shouldn’t they be Doom-Men or even D-Men? Ok, I hear it, neither sound good). X-Force has created their own Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic (Superman’s a great guy, he’ll be happy to have housemates).
2024 brings a number of X-Men stories that bring the promise of surprises and change. Let’s be honest, after the astonishing arrival of the Krakoa era, the couple of years that followed provided a consistency (and a lot of Quiet Council debates). The two five-part limited series, Fall of the House of X (by Gerry Duggan and Lucas Werneck) and Rise of the Power of X (Kieron Gillen and R.B.Silva) will be supported by a number of limited series before the X-Men: From the Ashes relaunch in July.
Dead X-Men appears to a excellently balanced title to the recently ended Immortal X-Men. One of the biggest reveals in the Krakoa era was the X-Men’s ability to overcome death. The fall of Krakoa appeared to have put an end to that mutant created advantage.
Five mutants who lost their lives at the Hellfire Gala are being resurrected to travel across time and space on a crucial mission for all mutants. You might be expecting a zombie comic (especial the massive Marvel crossover of the summer being Blood Hunt), but what we’re about to get is more cosmic.
Jubilee, Dazzler, Cannonball, Frenzy and Prodigy all suffered tragic deaths at the hands of the tyrannical Orchis. In Dead X-Men, Rachel Summers (the daughter of Jean Gray and Scott Summers from the future) is using her cosmic powers to propel the X-Men into a reality busting quest.
With his experience with X-Men, the Spider-Verse and X-Men ’92, Steve Foxe is bound to provide a mind-bending story with a good dose of threat and a few surprises along the way.
To find out exactly what the X-Men will need to do and whether they can make it through alive, we will have to wait until the first issue arriving at the end of January and continuing through to April.
