Coming Soon: Avengers Twilight
A New Year promises new resolutions, new opportunities and new starts, unless you are living in the new mini-series from Marvel, Avengers Twilight.
Chip Zdarsky, who has recently been delivering great stories on a massive run of Batman stories, is at the helm for a look into the future of the Marvel universe and Captain America with Avengers Twilight.
Despite the reference to Twilight in the title, we’re unlikely to find any sparkling vampires, but we are going to find a sparkling future that appears to be prosperous. Appears being the important word. Looks can be deceiving. Daniel Acuña’s artwork looks great, but it is presenting a less than optimistic view of the future.
Steve Rogers takes centre stage on most of the material for the first issue. Steve has hung up his shield, the Avengers have been disbanded and the age of heroes is over. And what about everything Captain America stood for? Freedom, gone. Justice, gone.
What can we expect?
If the covers are anything to go by, Steve is going to putting the uniform back on and Captain America is going to be coming back. The tagline “the future needs to be avenged” implies that we might have a forming of the Avengers, at least the ones that are left. We have the possibility that a couple of characters will be killed off or have already died. Captain America looks like he’s at least made it to the first issue. Given the super soldier serum, isn’t a surprise he’s outlived some of the other Avengers.
What we do get is a grizzled Steve Rogers looking displeased with the state of the world. Comparisons of Steve to Old Man Logan just make the story sound even better. However, the series is called Avengers Twilight, so we are likely to have other familiar characters appearing. It could be focused on Steve getting the band back together, but we might find Zdarsky has a few surprises in store for us.
If Zdarsky’s work on Batman is anything to go by, we are also likely to find out that the Avengers, Captain America or one of the other heroes has had something to do with the current state of the world. The recent Batman stories have Batman making life difficult for himself. Who knows, maybe Captain America is feeling a little guilt in with his disgust.
Daniel Acuña’s artwork is looking awesome. There are a few hints to the police state with Iron man helmets being worn by a few individuals. Acuña is also using some interesting pinks and blues to give the future technology a 3D feel.
The first issue of this six part series will be arriving on January 17. If you didn’t get what you wanted for Christmas, it looks like this will be delivering. Should we start calling Zdarsky Santa? Probably not. It looks like the New Year is going to be bleak for our favourite heroes.
