Welcome to Comic Tornado. What can you expect?
It’s a good time to be reading comics and watching superhero movies.
And it’s a good time to start reading comics and watching movies.
It might seem like 15 years of Marvel movies are getting a little tired or that the characters have been around for a while. Iron Man’s first comic appearance was 1963, which makes him a relative new comer compared to Superman, Captain America, Batman and Wonder Woman who all appear in comics for the first time between 1938 and 1941.
But right now we are at a crossroads. Marvel might count the movies in phases and tell us we are moving from phase five to six, but this is going to be a big shift in Marvel movies. We don’t have Iron Man or Captain America and the future of the Avengers is uncertain. And that is exciting. We are entering a realm of new Marvel movies with different types of movies and different characters.
Over at DC, James Gunn is providing a fresh start and after the second Aquaman movie arrives at Christmas, we will be moving into a new world of DC movies. We will have a few movies and characters left over (who doesn’t like a good Batman or Joker movies?), but the movies and TV shows are going to take us into different worlds with different characters.
And it’s not just Marvel and DC movies. Star Wars movies are set to change with the ever expanding universe that is appearing in TV shows like Ashoka. While it may seem like we are focusing our attention on the big names of hero and villain movies, we need to remember, the continuing interest in the movies will create more movies from different titles outside the world of DC, Marvel and Disney.
Then there are comics. You would be surprised how many fresh starts are happening around the comic book world and how many opportunities there are to start reading new characters who look very exciting and those more established characters who seem too intimidating to start reading.
Both Wonder Woman and Captain America have started new titles. Wonder Woman #1 (2023) creates a world where Amazonians have been outlawed in America and Wonder Woman is a wanted fugitive. Captain America #1 (2023) gives us some of Steve Rogers backstory while also focusing on the future of the character in modern today new York.
Then we have some familiar characters with new looks and new approaches. After
’s insane run on Daredevil, the character of Daredevil has just started a new #1 (2023) with a surprising new look. Speaking of surprising new looks, after the shocking fall of Krakoa and the fall of the mutants, the former X-Man Nightcrawler has taken on a new look and have been the Uncanny Spider-Man with his own #1 (2023).
So many great stories and interesting characters. There will probably be a few that don’t live up to expectations, but that’s what we are here for.
We will guide you to the stories you can’t miss and warn you about the ones that don’t quite make it. There will be interesting information. Stuff you probably already knew (a great opportunity to make a comment because we love to hear from you) and there’ll be some stuff you might not have known about. Comic books and movies have a lot of offering. Not just great stories, but also insights into who we are and how we function. We are working towards better living through comics.
Whatever happens, we look forward to talking heroes, villains, comics, movies, video games and everything in between.
