A Shark in King’s Clothing - Karshon in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Who is the mysterious Karshon character in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom movie?
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to arrive in theatres in December. We have a cast list and a couple of recently released trailers creating excitement for the movie.
The casting of Indya Moore as Karshon, The Shark has been a mysterious and intriguing part of preparations for the movie, especially because the character of Karshon does not appear in any of the most recent trailers.
Having a shark in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom might be making you think about the comic genius of King Shark or Nanaue played by Sylvester Stallone in The Suicide Squad movie. King Shark, supposedly the relative of a Shark God was a welcome addition to the film combing humour and horror in equal amounts.
The character of Karshon is not so much a King Shark, but could be a shark in King’s clothing.
Karshon appeared in a number of Aquaman comic book stories in the 1970s. Aquaman had been the reigning king of Atlantis. He was married to Mera and he had a son named Arthur jnr. or Aquababy. If you’ve seen the trailers for Aquaman and the Los Kingdom, this might sound very familiar. Aquaman’s involvement with the Justice League had taken him away from his duties as king for weeks an months at a time. In response, the Atlantean council vote to have Aquaman removed as king and Karshon becomes King of Atlantis.
When Aquaman returns, he is a little surprised. Aquaman finds Karshon to be unhelpful and in a number of investigations with his sidekick Aqualad, Aquaman discovers that Black Manta is running guns into Atlantis. The connection to Karshon begins to become clear and Karshon takes Mera and Aquababy hostage.
When Aquaman returns to Atlantis, Black Manta is waiting and takes him prisoner. While Aquaman is being held for treason against Atalntis, he finds his faithful adviser Vulko who informs Aquaman of Karshon’s telepathic powers. Aquaman fights and defeated Karshon which causes him to transform into his true for, The Shark.
Karshon was merely a disguise taken on by The Shark who used to be a normal shark until a number of experiments mutated him into a humanoid version of shark with all the ruthlessness and lust for blood of a shark.
The Shark attacks Aquaman and draws blood. Using the blood trail, Aquaman leads The Shark to barrels of dumped toxic waste. Aquaman bates The Shark into anger and The Shark attacks causing an explosion of the chemicals. The exploded toxic chemicals cause The Shark to transform back into his original form of a shark.
The comic book originates from a number of comics over 50 years old. While the trade paperback Aquaman: Death of a Prince is worth a read, there is not guarantee that the new Aquaman film will repeated the story exactly. What we do have is a number of interesting ideas of what might happen with Indya Moore’s character that might make for an interesting film.
We will have to wait until Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is released in December.
